Feeling Unsure About Birth?

Birth is a transformational experience, we all understand this obviously. This does, however, make the prospect of it that much more daunting and terrifying, doesn’t it? Is it just that that makes us feel so unsure about birth? and what could you do to overcome that uncertainty?

Do you think 100 years ago women felt as scared of birth? Maybe, but I reckon perhaps not AS much and why I think that is because women experienced birth firsthand much more often.

Births happened at home and very seldom in the hospital. This meant first daughters or sons would likely be there to witness the birth. Neighbours who had given birth themselves would be the ones to support you and hold space for you in your own labour.

There wasn’t such a warped idea of birth that we now see and hear from the media, TV and other birthing people who have only had hospital births.

In my opinion, a hospital birth is vastly different to a home birth. Isn’t a hospital where you go when you’re ill? So why are we all sent there to give birth?? Are you immediately ill and in terrible danger the minute you bare a child?? Sadly, that does seem to be the assumption of the medical world. But guess what, you’re not!

If birth was so inherently dangerous, do you think there’s any way we would have survived as a species?

If birth was so inherently dangerous, do you think there’s any way we would have survived as a species? HELL NO!

It’s only since male doctors got involved in the process of birth that it did become inherently dangerous.

Did you know the chainsaw, of all things, was created to cut a woman open during birth?!!!!!!!!! Now you might have an idea as to where things suddenly went wrong. Don’t believe me? Read this

All of a sudden birth was being intervened with. This natural process that we had been going through for millions of years was suddenly turned into a medical event that needed help.

Suddenly women were being told what positions to get in (the laying on the back was again invented by a man so that he could see what was happening down there!) when and how to push and guess what, we forgot how to innately give birth.

LET ME TELL YOU A SECRET THOUGH

This knowledge is imbedded in our bodies from the millions of women before us who gave birth naturally. It really is in your brain. It’s in your subconscious, you’ve just got to access it and believe in it again.

With all this then do you fall into trust, then do you KNOW you can birth this baby, even on your own if you want to! You know deep within you that you have the power!

Here’s what you can start doing to overcome this uncertainty around birth

  1. Watch videos of glorious natural births here’s one I highly recommend: https://www.instagram.com/p/CjnGLxKOl81/
  2. Learn about the wonders of the body during birth. This is so helpful and important because knowing the that body will naturally know what to do and move as is needed to support you in birthing your baby will give you the ability to fall into trust. I love the book The Female Pelvis and Preparing for a Gentle Birth by Blandine Calais-Germain
  3. Practice Yoga during pregnancy. Not only will this keep you strong and supple but by doing the right type of practice, you’ll become familiar with your body and be more able to listen to your own intuition.

4. Visualise your birth! This is so powerful! Visualise seeing your baby in your arms, having made that powerful journey and visualise it every day until you truly believe it will happen.

With all this then do you fall into trust, then do you KNOW you can birth this baby, even on your own if you want to! You know deep within you that you have the power!
